Impressionism, a historical reconstruction:

slideshow

of the

5th ‘impressionist’ exposition

1880

Introduction:
In 1880 the ‘5me exposition de peinture‘ was held in Paris. This exposition is now mostly called the 5th ‘impressionist’ exposition. There were 16 partakers. The catalogue rendered the numbers 1-232, but in reality there were much more art-works exhibibited, namely about 309. On this page you will find an accounted impression of these exhibited art-works, I render 272 pictures. See the accounts of the partaking artists and the clarification at the bottom of this page. If you double click on the first picture and then click on full screen, you can create a slideshow. On a smartphone or laptop you can also zoom in. Enjoy!

Clarification:
On this page you find 272 suggestions for the about 309 art-works that were exhibited at the 5th ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1880. Probably no.8 of Caillebotte wasn’t exhibited, instead he exhibited a portrait outside the catalogue (=hc).
Note: the given suggestions vary from certain (=!), to almost certain (=?!), to uncertain (=?), to very uncertain (=??), to most uncertain (=???), to compare (=compare:) with another work of the artist, to compare with a similar work from another artist or even a photo. Sometimes (37x) I have no suggestion at all, namely for no. 27-1 (Cassatt); 108 + 109 + 111 (Levert); 137 + 140-2 + 142-5 (Pissarro); 158 + 167-1 + 169 (Jean-François Raffaëlli); 184 + 190 + 191 + 192 (Rouart); 193 + 194 + 196 + 197 + 198 + 199 + 201 + 203 + 204(1-4) + 205(1-4) + 206 (Tillot); 208 + 209 + 215 (Vidal); 227 + 231 + 232 (Zandomeneghi). Helas, of several options I could only find a picture in black and white, namely no.16 of Caillebotte; no.46 of Forain; no.80 of Guillaumin; no.92 of Lebourg; nos. 105 +106 +107 +110 of Levert; no.117 of Morisot; nos. 144 +162 +177 +hc2 +hc3 of J.F. Raffaëlli; no.213 of Vidal; no.226+230 of Zandomeneghi. The following suggestion given to compare are very weak: no.71 of Guillaumin and no.160 of J.F. Raffaëlli. See the accounts of the partaking artists. See link for an explanation of the subscriptions.
