The Salon of 1874, short info: The Salon of 1874 started the 1st of May in the Palais des Champs-Elysées in Paris. The catalogue mentions 2508 partakers and 3703 numbers. There were 1852 paintings exhibited, 776 drawings / pastels / watercolours / gouaches / miniatures / enamels / porcelain / earthenware, 569 sculptures, 64 engravings in medals and on precious stones, 104* architecture, 255* engravings / etchings, 37* lithographes. There were also 33 artists that made (sometimes several) art-works for public monuments working on 42 projects**. So, in total there were 3657 + 42 = 3699 catalogue numbers, that sometimes contained more than 1 art-work. So, about 50% of the catalogue numbers contained paintings, about 21% drawings etc., about 15% sculptures and 7% etchings.
In 1874 the paintings at the Salon were hung in two rows (R88II,p396). Note*: (note: I render the amount of catalogue numbers). When indicated with an * a catalogue number often contained more than one art-work. The other groups of catalogue numbers sometimes contained more than one art-work. Note**: These works had no catalogue numbers, but in total there were 42 various projects. Sometimes the artists made works for the same building, namely the new Opera.
Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904): 1873, The Gray Cardinal (François Le Clerc du Trembly; 1577-1638), 69×102, MFA Boston (iR10;iR99;iR2;iR3;iR1;M22) = S1874-798, L’Eminence grise.
Highly awarded art-works: On this Salon Gérôme was awarded with a Medaille d’Honneur (for painting) for his work ‘The gray Cardinal’↑, a history painting. But, it was almost that Corot was nominated with a landscape (R410,p75+168). (In the future) you will find some more paintings that were highly rewarded at the Salon of 1874*, that can be seen as the standard of art. Note*: works that received a medal of honor, works that received a golden medal, were (assigned and) purchased by the state; of artists that later that year were appointed in the Légion d’Honneur as Officier or higher.
