Meta-Impressionism/ other exhibitions:
The Salon
1814 – 1827
Introduction:
The Salon of 1814/11/01 (iR1) was the first Salon after in 1814/04/24 the Bourbon dynasty was restored and Louis XVIII was crowned king (iR3). He was succeeded by Charles X 1824/09/16 (iR3), who abdicted 1830/08/02 after the July revolution (iR3). (see political developments)
In these years Ingres took over the Neo-Classical torch from David. But also another art-movement emerged: Romantism, represented by Géricault and Delacroix. And in 1824 the English painters Bonington and Constable received golden medals for their landscape paintings. Many French painters were inspired and started to paint en-plein-air*, namely also in the Fontainebleau forest. The so-called Barbizon school emerged, with representatives like Corot, Rousseau and many others.
Note*: this was already promoted by Valenciennes, a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts, in a publication of 1800.
On this page you will find some exhibited art-works (in a chronological and alphabetical way) and an overview from year till year. The Salon between 1814-1827 was held on an irregular basis, every two or three years. Between 1827 and 1831 there even was a cap of four years, probably due to the July revolution in 1830.
