Exposition Universelle

1878

A universal recognition

General info:
The art exposition at the Exposition Universelle can be seen as a universal recognition of an artist. It is interesting to see what works were exhibited, which ones were (highly) awarded and which ones were rejected. This page will render some impression. I will render special attention to the partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions, to pre-impressionists and para-impressionists. I mostly will limit to exhibited paintings.

Pictures highly awarded works:
The following French artists received a grande médaille d’honeur: Cabanel, Gérôme. The following French artists received a golden medal: xxx. Among the foreign artists that received a golden medal were Giuseppe de Nittis↓.
Note: More info and pictures will follow.

Art-works shown by the ‘impressionists’:
Probably Giuseppe de Nittis was the only one of the partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions who showed works at the art exhibition of the Exposition Universelle in 1878. He showed 12 paintings at the Italian section and received a golden medal↑. Later that year he was appointed as Chevalier in the Legion d’Honneur.

At other parts of the Exposition Universelle the following works were displayed:
Alfred Meyer probably showed a ring he made for pope Pius IX (iR40,bpt6k98215077).
Maybe a plate called ‘le verger’ designed by Félix Bracquemond also was shown at another part of this Exposition Universelle
(iR201;iR87).
Félix and Marie Bracquemond made a decoration project of the Muses of the arts with watercolour (iR201).
Note: Artcurial attributes it solely to Félix Bracquemond (iR201), Bouillon to both Félix and Marie (R168,p236).
Marie Bracquemond had made a large décoration project of the Muses of the arts on carton meant for the Haviland ceramiques.
Note: Art-Curial mentions it was made for a new type of decoration at the 1876 Paris exhibition of the Union centrale des beaux-arts appliqués à l’industrie (iR201). Bouillon dates it 1878 (R168,p235). Maybe it was also made for the Exposition Universelle in 1878.

I render the pictures alphabetically, by catalogue number and partly by form.

Note: more info will follow.

Art-Works of other French artists at the Oeuvres d’Art:
I will render some art-works (mainly paintings) of some other artists that were exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in 1878. I will render them by form and alphabetical.

Art-Works shown by foreign artists:
Here below you will find some art-works that were shown by foreign artists, like Tiffany.

Rejected pictures:

Note: more info will follow.
