Meta-Impressionism / other exhibitions:
Salon des Refusés
1873
joined by 29% of the partakers of the 1st ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1874
Introduction:
The Salon des Refusés held in 1873 officially was called an ‘Exposition Artistique des Oeuvres Refusés à l’Exposition officielle de 1873’ (R88II,p414;R287,p422;R5,p78). The catalogue mentions 277 partakers exhibiting 424 works. Of these 277 partakers, just 9 would join the ‘impressionist’ expositions: Attendu, Béliard, Bureau, Guillaumin, Latouche, Lépine, de Molins, Renoir and Rouart. So, seemingly not very relevant. Still, all these 9 ‘impressionists’ joined the 1st ‘impressionist’ exposition of 1874, thus representing 29% of the 30+1hc=31 partakers. In this sense it was this Salon des Refusés that was most related to the ‘impressionist’ expositions and not the one of 1863, which is mostly named in sources on Impressionism.
More info you will find on the main page on the Salon des Refusés. On this page you will find some pictures of the partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions that were (probably) exhibited. Note: If you double click on the first (of a cluster of) pictures and then click on full screen, you can create a (small) slideshow. On a smartphone or laptop you can also zoom in. Enjoy!
