Tillot: 1876 expo

Impressionism: a historical reconstruction

Charles-Victor Tillot

(1825-1906)

At the 2nd impressionist exposition in 1876

an impression of his exhibited art-works

Which art-works did Tillot exhibit in 1876?
On this page you will find an accounted impression of the 8 landscapes that Charles Tillot showed at the 2nd ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1876 (catalogue numbers 245-252). There were no reviews and there are hardly pictures known of Tillot, so identification is almost impossible. I mostly render to compare compilations of pictures, also using pictures of other artists and even photo’s. (The things that fit are indicated with a green colour, that don’t fit in a red colour and that partly fit in an orange colour.) In this way I hope to give at least some impression of what Charles Tillot did exhibit in 1876. See the account.
Note: in the future I hope to render better impressions of the works Tillot exhibited.
Here below you will find a more thematical representation of his exhibited works. In the slideshow you will find them in the order of the catalogue numbers. For info on the sources see at the bottom of the main page about Charles Tillot. Enjoy!

5 marines at Villers:
Charles Tillot showed 4 marines made in Villers-sur-Mer (50km south of Le Havre), namely no.245 +246 +247 +250. But I assume that no.248 also was made here. There is just one picture known of Tillot depicting Villers-sur-Mer: 18??, Sbl, The beach of Villers-sur-Mer (Calvados), on panel, 24×33, A2022/03/07 (iR11;iR18;R2). This picture I render as an uncertain option for no.250. For the other 4 works I made compilations including this same picture of Tillot and adding a picture of other artist that fits the title from the catalogue, namely of Caillebotte. See the account.

3 other landscapes:
Charles Tillot also showed 3 other landscapes (no.249 +251 +252).

Number 249 showed the Manoir de Graffard, which is an old mansion in Barneville-Carteret in the Normandy pen insula (iR4; WikiManche.fr).
To compare I render a compilation of an old postcard (see) and a more recent photo (iR6). See the account.

Number 251 depicted the ‘Plaine de Barbizon‘.
To compare I render a compilation of two paintings. First a painting of Théodore Rousseau (1812-1867) depicting the plains of Barbizon: 1850s, Edge of the Woods (Plain of Barbizon near Fontainebleau), 55×65, MFA Boston (M22;iR6). Secondly a landscape attributed to Charles Tillot, depicting a forest scene: 18??, Sunlit pathway through forest, on board, 26×39cm, A2024/09/14 (iR502;iR10;R2,p207). See the account.

Number 252 was titled ‘Intérieur du Bas-Bréau‘.
To compare I render a compilation of two paintings. First a painting of Théodore Rousseau (1812-1867) depicting the interior of the forest at Bas-Bréau: 1836-37, Intérieur de forêt (Le Vieux Dormoir du Bas-Bréau), 65×103, Orsay (iR155;iR10;iR23;M1;M5). Secondly a painting attributed to Charles Tillot, also depicting a forest scene: 18??, Sunlit pathway through forest, on board, 26×39cm, A2024/09/14 (iR502;iR10;R2,p207). See the account.
