a topographical overview

Titles of his pictures arranged on location:
On this page I will render a topographical overview of the (titles of the exhibited) pictures of Rouart. Some titles will be rendered more than one time, because they fit several themes. See also the thematical overview. See also my account. For info on the sources see at the bottom of the main page about Henri Rouart.

Pictures made at 34, Rue Lisbonne, Paris:
Henri Rouart bought in 1869 (aR6) a house at 34, Rue Lisbonne, Paris; in fact in 1869 he bought the site, where in 1871 his house was build (R92,p129+130). In 1872 and 1873 this adres is mentioned in the Salon database (iR1). But in 1868, 69 and 70 149, Rue Oberkampf is given as his address (iR1). This house lies between parc Monceaux and the Saint-Lazare station in the 8th arrondissement. Rouart made some interiors here, see Rey number 4 + 6 + 28 (R92). As far as I know he didn’t exhibit works made here during his life, except maby an interior (see below).

Pictures made in and around La Queue-en-Brie:
His father acquired in the early 1850s a residence in La-Queue-en-Brie (R92,p127;R3,p693), this is about 20km south-east of Paris (see)*. Roe mentions diner invitations to Degas around 1882 (R4,p237). From 1891-1912 Rouart was mayor of La-Queue-en-Brie (aR3; aR7). Degas sometimes stayed with the Rouart family in La-Queue-en-Brie around 1902-05 (R92,p139;R5,p230). Rouart made many works made her. As far as I know, Rouart never exhibited a work with ‘La Queue-en-Brie’ in the title. Still I render several works made in La Queue-en-Brie which might have been exhibited or that compare works that have been exhibited.
Note*: Some say this was around 1851-52 (aR6), others around 1840 (aR8), others in 1847 (iR79).

Pictures made in Mée and Melun:
Henri Rouart married his wife Hélène Jacob-Desmalter in 1861. Her parents had an estate in at Mée, along the Quai des Fournaux (=furnaces). His mother-in-law died in 1896. So Rouart must have painted here between 1861-1896. According to Rey, this Quai des Fournaux, nowadays is the quai Allia, but this doesn’t give a hit on Google-maps. Maybe the Quai Étienne Lallia, Mée-sur-Seine is intended; and indeed we see a Chemin des Fours à chaux (=limestone kilns) closeby. Rey also claims that Rouart made several fews of Melun, from this estate (R92,no10+12). He than depicts a former iron bridge, now Pont Maréchal Leclerc, connecting the left bank of the Seine to the Island in the Seine and being the more western bridge. He also depicts the two towers of the Collegiate church of Notre-Dame on the Island, close to the more eastern bridge, the Pont Notre-Dame. And indeed at one point on the Quai Étienne Lallia, a bit east of number 256, you can see the Pont Maréchal Leclerc, with in the distance the two towers, the Seine streaming to the left, the right and in front of you, just like Rouart depicted it.

Pictures made in the mids of France:
In 1866 Rouart started a factory in Montluçon, about 330km south of Paris; he would close it in 1899 (R92,p129+138;iR9). Through Montluçon flows the river Cher. 1893 onwards till the last years of his life he would visit Mme Brandon at ‘La Commanderie’ in Ballan-Miré (R92,p138), which lies close to the Loire and the river Cher and just south of Tours, about 230km north-west of Montluçon. 1895-1906 Rouart spents time in the Touraine region, visiting Mme Halphen Salvador (R92,p29). Rouart also visited often general François-Michel Meliodon at his castle la Busardière close to Mans (R92,p29), about 100km north-west of Tours. Rouart spent several holidays in the middle of France. In 1872 Charentes (maybe close to Limoges), in 1874 Bourges, in 1875 La Châtre, + Vendôme, in 1894 in la Creuse, probably ment is the river, maybe the town la Creuse, near Amiens in the north of France.  (R92,p130-139). What strikes me is the distance between all these places. Painting these spots, couldn’t be done by a short trip from Montluçon, nor from the places he visited on his holidays. In 1899 Rouart would decorate the infirmary hall in Ballan-Miré with several enlarged copies of his pictures (R92,p138+no12). It is unclear if Mme Brandon is related to Edouard Brandon, Rouart his teacher, who also joined the 1st ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1874.

Pictures made in the Pyrenees:
Rouart spent frequently his holidays in the Pyrenees (R92,p110). More in general in 1893. More specific in Cauterets (1877+1884; his wife received a cure here; R92,p110); in closeby Luz (1877); in Pau (1891), where he probably more often visited his friend Lafond (R92,p110). And more north of the Pyrenees in Carcassonne (1891; R92,no37). (R92,p131-139). Rouart also met Colin at Ciboure. See also the account for the locations of the exhibited works.

See also the account for the locations of the exhibited works. In 1891 he visited Collioure, Marseille and more north Avignon. In 1895 he returned to Marseille and also visited Saint-Raphaël, about 150km eastwards. (R92,p130-139)

Collioure
In 1891 Rouart visited Collioure, close to the Spanish border. In 1900 the art-dealer Brame showed his Port de Collioure. In a letter (1901/08/03) Rouart writes about almost finishing a work on Collioure. (R92,p106).

Marseille
Rouart visited Marseille in 1891, but also earlier since 1879/80 and later in 1895 (R92,p134+106+138). Here he depicted the Fort Saint-Jean (iR3 ;iR9), also rendered at old postcards (iR42; iR10)*. Rouart also made an etch of the Fort Saint-Jean. One print is part of the Print portfolio Croquis a L’Eau-Forte printed in 1877 and now in NM Warsaw (M269). So, Rouart must have visited Marseille before 1877, or he must have made this etch after an existing picture.
Note*: This work is often titled ‘Vue de Collioure’, stating it depicts the lighthouse; this lighthouse looks slightly but clearly different (iR139).  (R92,no36;R397,p55). The etch is even called ‘La Rochelle’ (iR86).

Pictures made in Venice and Italy:
Rouart spent his holidays in Venice in 1879 + 1883 and also in other parts of Italy in Gênes/Genoa 1861, in 1883 Vérone, in October 1892 Rome, Pistoia, Milan and Gênes/Genoa (R92,p128-139). Rey states that Rouart made most of his watercolours in 1883 (R92,p28), but this seems contradicted by the fact that he exhibited 8 in 1880, which must be made in 1879.

Exhibited works of Italy:
Rouart also made pictures in other parts of Italy. Rouart spent his holidays in Gênes/Genoa 1861 (at the Italian Rivièra), in 1883 Vérone, in October 1892 Rome, Pistoia, Milan and Gênes/Genoa (R92,p128-139). He also had spend time in Florence, depicting the Neptune fountain↑, the Jean de Bologne fountain (probably now known as the Fontana dell’Oceano)and the Cloitre de Santa Maria Novella (this monastery corridor is now part of a museum; iR4). In Rome he depicted the scenes near the Villa Médicis (the vestibule and Mercure). He also depicted the Lac de Lugano.
