Along the Oise

Where the School of Pontoise was active

Introduction:
The Oise is a river in the north of France that streams in the Seine about 30km west of Paris. Stream upwards lies Pontoise and Auvers-sur-Oise, villages that were important meeting points for the ‘impressionists’ and Pre-Impressionists. On this page the locations stream upwards will be shortly mentioned and some pictures painted there will be added. Sometimes we will go a bit more land inward.
Note: At some places the ‘impressionists’ and others made so many paintings, that you will be directed to a seperate page.

Pontoise:
Pontoise lies around 30km west/north of Paris. In 1866 Pissarro moved to Pontoise. In the summer of 1872 he will paint here with Cézanne. Guillaumin will (often) visit him. In 1877 he paints here with Cézanne and Gauguin. In 1883 Pissarro will move to Osny↓, 3km west of Pontoise (R3,p689).

Le Chou:
Le Chou is a hamlet and lies just north of Pontoise (iR9).

Auvers-sur-Oise:

Butry-sur-Oise:
Butry-sur-Oise lies just north of Auvers-sur-Oise (iR9).
I couldn’t find pictures made here. In the future I will look some more.

Valmondois:
Valmondois lies just north of Butry-sur-Oise (iR9). Just a small part is connected with the Oise. The mere part lies more to the west.
Pierre-Isidore Bureau exhibited in 1876 the Château de Valmondois (see 2IE-1876-11).

Parmain:
Parmain lies just north of Valmondois (iR9).

L’Isle-Adam:
L’Isle-Adam lies 7km north-east of Auvers-sur-Oise at the left (east) bank of the river Oise, opposite Parmain (iR9).

Jouy-le-Comte:
Jouy-le-Comte is a hamlet and lies at the opposite bank of L’Isle-Adam and just north of Parmain (iR9).

Osny:
Osny lies 3km west of Pontoise, so not along the Oise. In 1883 Pissarro moved here (R3,p689).
