Introduction: The Oise is a river in the north of France that streams in the Seine about 30km west of Paris. Stream upwards lies Pontoise and Auvers-sur-Oise, villages that were important meeting points for the ‘impressionists’ and Pre-Impressionists. On this page the locations stream upwards will be shortly mentioned and some pictures painted there will be added. Sometimes we will go a bit more land inward. Note: At some places the ‘impressionists’ and others made so many paintings, that you will be directed to a seperate page.

Pontoise: Pontoise lies around 30km west/north of Paris. In 1866 Pissarro moved to Pontoise. In the summer of 1872 he will paint here with Cézanne. Guillaumin will (often) visit him. In 1877 he paints here with Cézanne and Gauguin. In 1883 Pissarro will move to Osny↓, 3km west of Pontoise (R3,p689).

Auvers-sur-Oise: Auvers-sur-Oise lies 6km north-east of Pontoise. The Pre-Impressionists Daubigny, Courbet and Daumier worked in Auvers-sur-Oise . Cézanne, Renoir and Sisley and later Vincent van Gogh lived here (R3,p645). Norbert Goeneutte, a friend of Renoir, died here in 1894/10/09 (R31,p306).
Butry-sur-Oise:
Butry-sur-Oise lies just north of Auvers-sur-Oise (iR9).
I couldn’t find pictures made here. In the future I will look some more.
Valmondois:
Valmondois lies just north of Butry-sur-Oise (iR9). Just a small part is connected with the Oise. The mere part lies more to the west. Pierre-Isidore Bureau exhibited in 1876 the Château de Valmondois (see 2IE-1876-11).
