Meta-Impressionism / other exhibitions
1888 exposition
at Durand-Ruel
in Paris
Introduction:
In 1888 Durand-Ruel organised a large exposition in his Paris gallery at 11, Rue le Peletier. It included works of many impressionists like Boudin; Caillebotte; Lépine, Morisot; Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley and related painters like Brown and Whistler. At the bottom of this page you will find more info and an account.
At this page you will find an impression of some of these pictures. I will render the pictures by form and in order of the catalogue numbers. Note: If you double click on the first (of a cluster of) pictures and then click on full screen, you can create a slideshow. Enjoy!
More info on the 1888 exposition at Durand-Ruel:
I couldn’t find an online catalogue, so all my information is indirect.
This exposition started the 25th of May and ended the 25th of June and took place in Paris (R116I,p363;R166,p53+273;R396,p528;R398,p260).
Another source claims it took place in New York (R186,p343) and another that there also was an expo in New York in May (R398,p260).
The following artists (at least) did participate:
Eugène Boudin: is mentioned as partaker (R166,p273)
Note: Flavie Durand-Ruel doesn’t mention this exposition (R51,p35)
Gustave Caillebotte: (at least) 6 works were shown: no.8 Jardin; 12, Petit bras à Argenteuil (=2CR381); 62, Champ jaune et rose (=2CR291); 63, Canotiers; 64, Champ jaune (=2CR267); 70, Au bord de l’eau. (R102,p283) In a letter Caillebotte had mentioned 6 other works: Homme au bain (=2CR285or286); Portrait de Mr. J.D.(=!?2CR320); Gâteaux (=!?2CR197); Faisans (=?2CR247or281); Huîtres (=!?2CR195); Une rue de Colombes (R102,p278). In a letter to his brother Théo, Vincent van Gogh expressed his interest in the works of Caillebotte at this exposition (R102,p283).
Stanislas Lépine: is mentioned as partaker (R166,p273)
Berthe Morisot: 5 works were shown (R398,p260).
Camille Pissarro: 26 works were shown in the first room; 11 paintings and 15 pastels and gouaches (R116I,p208;R5,p162);
including CCP 464 +?642 +?646+649+665+703 (R116I,p363);
all dating from 1881-85 (so, not his néo-impressionistic works, though Pissarro had wished otherwise); he is called ’the old Impressionist’ (R116I,p208).
x or 13x),
Auguste Renoir: 24 works: 19 paintings and 5 pastels or gouaches (R31,p303+315;R5,p162).
Alfred Sisley: The number of works is not fully clear. Gale mentions just 17 pictures (R53,p141). Cahn writes 25 works were shown: 17 paintings and 8 pastels or gouaches (R166,p273). Godfroy mentions 24 works of Sisley, partly loans of collectors, of which none were sold. She specifies that Sisley himself did lent 8 pastels and 1 oil; Dubourg did lent 5 or more paintings; Aubry 2; Faure 1. (R166,p46+53,note87;R5,p162).
related painters:
Brown: is mentioned as partaker (R166,p273)
Whistler: is mentioned as partaker (R166,p273)
Note: Claude Monet didn’t partake (R22I,p241;R166,p46).
Account:
Most of my suggestions are done by Berhaut (R102). Note: the indentification of a painting is not always certain.
