Salon de la Rose+Croix
1892 – 1897
Salon de la Rose+Croix:
Founded by Joséphin (Sär) Péladan, an art-critic. There were 6 exhibitions held from 1892-1897. Themes that were favorite were: the ideals, the occult, the legends, the myths, the allegories. Several symbolist artists exhibited. In 1892 Redon and Schuffenecker were mentioned in the catalogue, but no works are mentioned (iR1) and Schuffenecker seems not to have participated (R54,p119). Desboutin exhibited two works in 1892 (his son André also exhibited) and in 1893 he exhibited a portrait of Sär Péladan. In 1897 Astruc exhibited two sculptures. These were the only contributions by the ‘impressionists’.
Louis Anquetin and Maurice Denis are also mentioned as members, but doesn’t seem to be mentioned in the catalogues (iR1;R54,p119).
There were 30 (1894) till 80 (1892) partakers, with an average of 49. Showing in total 1023 art-works (=catalogue numbers), varying from 84 (1894) till 275 (1893) with an average of 171. So in general you could say per exhibition there were more partakers than at the ‘impressionist’ expositions from 1874-86, but in average lesser works were shown.
Note: at the bottom of this page you will find links to 5 of the 6 catalogues.
