Along the Seine

 

Introduction:

The Impressionists did meet and paint together in several places along the Seine. We will mention the most important locations, starting in Paris and following the Seine westwards till Le Havre. The left bank of the Seine is mostly the south bank; because of the meandering sometimes the left bank is more in the west or the east. Issy-les-Moulineaux:

Issy-les-Moulineaux (often just: Issy) lies about 3km south of Paris on the left / east bank of the Seine.

Sèvre:

Sèvre lies about 6km south/west of Paris on the left / south bank of the Seine.

Courbevoie / Île de la Grande Jatte:

Courbevoie lies on the left / west bank of the Seine. In the Seine lies the Île de la Grande Jatte where Seurat painted around 1885 and Monet in 1878.

Asnières-sur-Seine:

Asnières-sur-Seine lies on the left / west bank of the Seine.

Clichy:

Clichy lies on the opposite right / east bank of the Seine.

Argenteuil: 

Argenteuil lies on the right / west bank of the Seine. See separat page.

Petit Gennevilliers

Le Petit Gennevilliers lies opposite of Argenteuil on the left / east bank of the Seine. Now it’s part of Gennevilliers .

Chatou / Fournaise:

Chatou lies on the right / west bank of the Seine, south of Argenteuil, 15km west from Paris. Caillebotte, Degas, Monet and Sisley worked here (R3,p654). In the Seine lies the Île de Chatou with the Restaurant Fournaise, owned by Père Fournaise, who was portrayed by Renoir in 1875 (R30,no182). His daughter, Alphonsine, was a model for Renoir in 1875 and 1879 (R3; R30,no183+373). Renoir painted here several times (R30,no452+468+471). Also Maupassant (a writer) and Caillebotte were regular visitors (R3,p662).

Croissy-sur-Seine / La Grénouillère:

Croissy-sur-Seine lies on the right / north-west bank of the Seine, south of Chatou. In the Seine lies the Île de la Chaussée on which La Grénouillère was found.

Bougival:

Bougival lies opposite of Croissy on the left / south bank of the Seine, about 15km west of Paris.

Louveciennes:

West of Bougival on the left / south bank of the Seine lies Louveciennes .

Marly:

West/north of Louveciennes lies Marly-le-Roi, with Le Port-Marly along the left / south bank of the Seine, about 18km west from Paris.

Poissy:

Much further to the west lies Poissy on the left / south bank of the Seine.

Vétheuil:

Vétheuil lies on the right / east bank of the Seine. Monet lived here from 1878-81 and would later in 1901 paint here again (R22,CR1635ff).

Lavacourt:

Lavacourt lies opposite of Vétheuil on the left / west bank of the Seine. Monet would often paint here.

La Roche Guyon:

La Roche Guyon is famous for it’s castle and lies on the right / north bank of the Seine. In 1864 Pissarro visits Piette here. Monet painted the road to Roche Guyon from Vétheuil in 1880. Renoir and Cézanne painted here together in 1885 (R31,p312).

Bennecourt:

Bennecourt lies on the right / north bank of the Seine. Monet lived here in 1868 (R22,p70) and painted here again in 1885/87/93 after he had moved to Giverny, which lies about 5km north of Bennecourt.

Giverny:

Giverny lies about 75km west of Paris. Monet came to live here in 1883 and received many other painters, also from other countries. See separat page.

Rouen:

Rouen lies on both sites of the Seine about 130km west/north of Paris.

The mouth of the Seine:

With Le Havre and Saint-Adresse. And on the left / south bank: Honfleur, including the farm Saint-Siméon, Pourville. See separat page.
