pictures

a thematical overview

Introduction:
On this page you will find an overview of the paintings that Gustave-Henri Colin has made. I render the pictures in a sort of thematical way and by form. I also render suggestions of what works he might have exhibited at the 1st ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1874 (=1IE-1874), at the Salon from 1857–79 (=S), at its successor the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français from 1880-88 (=SdAF), at its alternative the Salon de la Société National des Beaux-Arts from 1890-1910 (=SNBA) and at auction sales at Hôtel Drouot in 1882+1886+1909 (=HD). Just a single suggestion is (almost) certain. Most of my suggestions are (very) uncertain or just to compare. Several suggestions are interchangeable. For many exhibited works I have no suggestion at all. See link for my account. See also the thematical and topographical overview of the titles of his pictures. The works of Colin are not well documented, there is no Catalogue Raisonnée, many works are not dated and most of his works are in private hands. Many pictures on the internet have a poor quality. See for the sources at the bottom of the main page on Gustave Colin. See link for explanation of the subscriptions. Note: If you double click on the first picture (of a group of pictures) and then click on full screen, you can create a small slideshow. Enjoy!

Marins:
Colin made many marins. Including the Pasajes bay; harbours, seaviews.
In several marins Colin seems to stand in a Romantic tradition: In Romanticism the emphasize lies on dramatic and tragic events, like the inescapable fate. Heavy sentiments are rendered, like enclosure, anxiety and despair. It depicts the human helplessness against the forces of nature is an important theme.

Bullfighting and Basque folklore:
Colin made many pictures of bullfighting scenes and also of Basque folklore. He less often exhibited them, when compared with his exhibited landscapes.

Landscapes and city views:
Including city and village views; village roads; buildings; churches; landscapes:

Mountain views:
Including hunters; the Pyrenees; mountains and streams:

Figure painting and portraits:
Including figures in a landscape.

Still-lifes:
As far as I know Colin exhibited just 1 still life. I also could find just 1 picture of a still-life, which I render to compare.
