General introduction:

On this page you will find an account of the pictures that Attendu maybe showed at the first ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1874 and at the official Paris Salon from 1870 until 1898. As the main sources I used Moffett (R2) and the database of the Musée d’Orsay (aR1). Moffett doesn’t give any suggestion of what contemporary work could be the same as Attendu exhibited in 1874. Attendu made many kitchen and food still lives and of most of his works it’s unknown in what year he made it, this makes the indication his works mostly ‘very uncertain’, see more. Often to ‘compare’ another picture is given that similarities with the painting that was exhibited. For explanation of the subscriptions, see here. Attendu at the first ‘impressionist’  exposition 1874:

Overview:
  • catalogue numbers 7 – 12
  • in no.9 the title has a plural form, so I quess it contained at least two works
  • so Attendu probably showed at least 7 works
  • three of them were loans of unknown owners (no. 7, 11 and 12)
  • three of them were aquarelles (no. 10-12)
  • 1x an indication of place
  • 0x an indication of time, season or weather
  • 0x a study

 

The catalogue numbers:

1874-7            Nature morte (appartient à M.A.Q)

  • nature morte = still life
  • as a very uncertain suggestion I give ‘Küchenstilleben mit Weinballon und Tonkrug sowie einem Schemel und Kerzenständer’ (Eng.: kitchen still life with wine balloon and stone jug and also a stool and candlestick); I found it on artnet (=iR13)

1874-8            Un fin connaisseur

  • Eng.: a subtle expert (?)
  • I have no suggestion and no idea what is ment with this tittle
  • there is a possibility this painting was a portrait, which would be one of the few portraits of Attendu

1874-9            Quelques réflexions (au XIIIe arrondissement)

  • Eng.: some reflections on the 13th quarter
  • see Google-maps for the XIIIe arrondisement in Paris
  • the plural form of the title suggest at least two paintings showed under one catalogue number
  • it suggests city views of the 13th quarter in Paris
  • as suggestion I give two pictures of city views; they are not of the XIIIe arrondisement (?) so they are just to compare
  • my first suggestion is a later (1891) picture ‘Winterliche Strassenansicht’ (Eng.: streetview in winter) I found on artnet (=iR13)
    • the title indicates the rendering of the influence of weather / season; the painting does the same
    • this makes it in some way an impressionistic work
    • the brushstroke is quiet loose, but not junxtaposed
    • the signature is in the right corner below ‘F A  Paris 91’
  • my second suggestion is called ‘Sucy en Brie’ I found on artnet (=iR13)
    • Sucy-en-Brie is a small municipality 20km south-east of Paris; see GoogleMaps for Sucy en Brie
    • the pictures showes a streetview with a clear rendering of the influence of sunlight
    • the brushstroke is not smooth and full of detail, but not very lively either
    • this makes it in some way an impressionistic work
    • the signature and the title is in the right corner below

1874-10          Nature morte : musique (aquarelle)

  • Eng.: still life: music (watercolour)
  • I have no suggestion for this work
  • the tittle indicates it’s a still life apart from his main theme kitchen and food

1874-11          Nature morte : cuisine  (aquarelle, appartient à  M.J.D)

  • Eng.: still life: kitchen (watercolour, loan of mister J. D.)
  • Attendu made many still lives of kitchens and many of his works are not dated so it’s very hard to identify this work
  • I didn’t found an aquarelle of Attendu
  • to compare I give a pastel ‘still life with chicken’ which is now in the musée du Château de Luneville and which I found on Wikimedia (=iR6)

    • this is one of the three works of Attendu of which is in a museum (aR3)
    • the signature is in the left corner below
    • the date is before 1866 (aR3) or before 1888 (aR4)

1874-12          Nature morte : cuisine (aquarelle, appartient à  M.J.D)

Salon 1870:

In 1870 Attendu made his debut at the Salon with two works.

  • nr.61: Nature morte
    As very uncertain suggestion I give a still life from the artnet (iR13)
  • nr.3024: Saltimbanque, d’après M. Mettling ; aquarelle
    Eng.: circus artist or fair acrobat; so probably this was a sort of portrait
    was M. Mettling the same as his teacher M.L. (Louis) Mettling?
    I have no suggestion for this work

Salon 1872:

Attendu didn’t show a work at the Salon. The chance is big that he was rejected.
(Because of the French – Prussian war, there was no Salon in 1871.)

Salon des Refusée 1873:

Obviously Attendu was rejected for the Salon of 1873 and exhibited at the Salon des Refusés

  • nr.399: Nature morte
    As a very uncertain suggestion I give a kitchen still life I found on askart (iR41)
  • nr.400: Un vieux type
    Eng.: an old type; probably this was a portrait. I haven’t found a suggestion.

Salon 1874:

In 1874 Attendu exhibited one work; maybe one was rejected.

  • nr.45: Huîtres, etc
    (Eng.: oysters). I don’t have a suggestion.

Salon 1875:

Two works of Attendu were accepted

  • nr.46: Salade Mayonnaise
    I don’t have a suggestion.
  • nr.47: Lapin de garenne
    (Lapin = rabbit). To compare I give a pastel, a still life with a rabbit, pheasant and pigeon from the artnet (=iR13).

Salon 1876:

One work of Attendu was accepted (and maybe one rejected?)

  • nr.44: Le thé
    (It’s uncertain if this picture represented a cup (as a still life) of tea or a social gathering drinking tea. I assume the first. Compare S1877-58). I don’t have a suggestion for this work.

Salon 1877:

Two works of Attendu were exhibited

  • nr.58 Le café
    (It’s uncertain if this picture represented a cup of coffee (as a still life) or a coffee-house. I assume the first. Compare S1876-58.)
    I don’t have a suggestion for this work.
  • nr.59: Les huîtres
    (Eng.: oysters) I don’t have a suggestion for this work.

Salon 1878:

Attendu exhibited one work (maybe one was rejected):

  • nr.59: Le déjeuner froid
    (Eng.: the cold lunch. It’s uncertain if this picture represented the food (as a still life) or a social gathering of people having a cold lunch. I assume the first.) I don’t have a suggestion for this work.

Salon 1879:

Two works of Attendu were exhibited

  • nr.78: ‘Chez mon écaillère’
    (Eng.: with my scale; Nl.: met mijn schub; a still life with fish? ). I don’t have a suggestion.
  • nr.79: Les langoustes
    (Eng.: lobster). As very uncertain suggestion I give a still life with a lobster and cucumbers in a glas from the artnet (=iR13).

Salon 1880:

Two works of Attendu were accepted

  • nr.94: La Valence !; 78x140cm
    (Eng.: Valencia or orange. The title reads as an exclamation, so I suppose it’s a city view of the town Valencia in Spain, see Google-maps. Compare S1883-56.)
  • nr.95: Pommes; 78x140cm
    (Eng.: apples) As a very uncertain I give a still life with an apple from the artnet (=iR13).
  • both: ‘non exempts = recus sans examen’ (Eng.: exhibiting without having passed an exam)

Salon 1881:

Two works of Attendu were accepted

  • nr.49: Arrivage du Mans
    (Eng.: arrival of a ship called ‘Le Mans’ ? Or: arrival at Le Mans (see Google-maps) ? I suggest to depict this picture as a city view, but don’t have a suggestion.)
  • nr.50: Les Victimes
    (Eng.: the victims. I suggest to depict this picture as a portrait, but don’t have a suggestion.)

Salon 1882:

Attendu exhibited one work (maybe one was rejected):

  • nr.61: Chez l’armurier
    (Eng.: armourer; Nl.: wapensmid) On ebay (=iR42) I found a drawing signed by Attendu and drawn after this picture he exhibited.

Salon 1883:

Two works of Attendu were accepted

  • nr.55: Le chaudron (appartient à M. Charles Tissier)
    (Eng.: kettle; Nl.: kookketel)
    To compare I give a still life with a pewter jug I found on ‘La Vie Moderne’ (=iR34), an interesting website on the eight ‘impressionist’ expositions in Italien.
    I think it’s one of his most beautiful still lives. Note: this is one of the few loans that Attendu exhibited at the Salon.
  • nr.56: La Valence ! La belle Valence !
    (Eng.: Beautiful Valencia. So probably a city view. Compare S1880-94.) I don’t have a suggestion.

Salon 1884:

Two works of Attendu were accepted

  • nr.52: Les dattes
    (Eng.: date; Nl.: dadel) I don’t have a suggestion.
  • nr.53: La Terrine
    (Eng.: tureen; Nl.: aarden pot). I don’t have a suggestion.

Salon 1885:

Attendu exhibited three works:

  • nr.76: Le potiron
    (Eng.: pumpkin; Nl.: pompoen). I don’t have a suggestion.
  • nr.77: Les Armures
    (Eng.: armour)
    As uncertain suggestion I give a still life with armour, which is now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rennes. I found the picture in the interesting article of the eclectic light company (iR35)
  • nr.2511: Dans les champs, pastel
    (Eng.: in the field. So probably a landscape.) I don’t have a suggestion.

Salon 1886:

Attendu exhibited three works:

  • nr.55: Le chou
    (Eng.: cabbage; Nl.: kool). I don’t have a suggestion.
  • nr.77: Le Lièvre
    (Eng.: hare; Nl.: haas). To compare I give a drawing of a dead hare on a basket near a pot.
  • nr.2511: les oeufs, pastel
    (Eng.: the eggs). To compare I give an oil painting of a still life with eggs from the artnet (=iR13). Note that this painting is rather big for a still life: 81x54cm

Salon 1887:

Attendu exhibited three works:

  • nr.55: Les citrons
    (Eng.: lemons). To compare I give a still life with quinces that was auctioned at Christies 10/6/2008 (=iR15).
  • nr.2556: Le Poulet, pastel
    (Eng.: chicken). I don’t have a suggestion.
  • nr.2557: les grenades, pastel
    (Eng.: the pomegranate; Nl.: granaatappel). I don’t have a suggestion.

Salon 1888:

Two works of Attendu were accepted

  • nr.66: Les portugaises
    (Eng.: the Portugees. So probably a portrait.) I don’t have a suggestion.
  • nr.2615: Le lapin de garenne
    (Eng.: rabbit. Compare S1875-47.)

Salon 1889:

Attendu exhibited three works:

  • nr.58: La dame-jeanne
    (Eng.: the lady Jane (?). So probably a portrait. I don’t have a suggestion.
  • nr.2801: La dinde, pastel
    (Eng.: turkey). I don’t have a suggestion.
  • nr.2802: le livarot, pastel
    (Eng.: a sort of cheese). To compare I give an oil painting, a still life with cheese and apples

Salon 1890:

Attendu exhibited three works:

  • nr.50: Coin de crémerie
    (Eng.: corner of the creamery; Nl. hoek van het melkhuisje. So probably an interieur.) I don’t have a suggestion.
  • nr.51: nature mort
    It could be any still life. I don’t have a suggestion.
  • nr.2513: l’oie, pastel
    (Eng.: goose). I don’t have a suggestion.

Salon 1891-1898

Walther suggests Attendu has exhibited regularly until 1898 (R3,p645). The Salons database (aR1) doesn’t give any information.
