Zacharie Astruc (1833-1907)

Account expositions

Introduction :

This account on the works Astruc exhibited is mostly a translation in English and Dutch of the 1874 catalogue. On the internet and in books there are not much works of Astruc to be found. Most are sculptures or water-colours of later years. I give only three suggestions of which works were to be seen at the first ‘impressionist’ exposition. Moffett (R2,p118+124) gives only two suggestions.

Overview:

  • catalogue numbers 1-6
  • no. 3 contains 6 water-colours
assuming 1874-3-2 consists of just one frame
  • no. 4 contains 4 paintings
  • in total Astruc showed 14 works
    • 6 oil paintings and 8 watercolours
    • 7x an indication of place (mostly very global)
5x referring to Flandres of which 2 more specific of districts in Brussels
    • 0x an indication of time, season or weather
    • 0x a study
    • 0x a loan

1874-1            Le Bouquet à la pénitente (aquarelle)

Eng: The (flower) bouquet of the penitent (?) (water-colour); Nl.: Het boeket van de boetvaardige (?) (aquarel)

1874-2                        La Leçon du vieux torero (aquarelle)

Eng.: The lesson of the old bullfighter; Nl.: De les van de oude stierenvechter. Because bullfighting is mostly done in Spain, probably this work was made in Spain. Astruc made several works with Spanish themes. I don’t know if he went there several times. When not he probably made some works from memory and not on the spot. Just to compare I render: 1873, Scène de rue à Cuenca, wc, xx, MBA Pau (iR6).

1874-3                        Cadre de figures contenant : (aquarelles)

Eng.: Framework with picture containing; (watercolours)  Nl.: (Schilders)lijst met afbeelding bevattende:
Note: within this single catalogue number follow 6 aquarelles

1874-3-1                     Dames flamandes à leur fenêtre

Eng.: Flemish women at their windows;     Nl.: Vlaamse vrouwen bij hun raam

1874-3-2                     Scènes de somnambulisme

Eng.: Scenes of sleepwalking ;       Nl.: Taferelen met slaapwandelen. Note: the plural form suggest more than one picture; are these different pictures within different frames or within one frame? I will presume the last.

1874-3-3                     Enfants flamands dans une serre

Eng.: Flemish children in a greenhouse;    Nl.: Vlaamse kinderen in een serre

1874-3-4                     Poupées japonaises

Eng.: Japanese dolls ;    Nl.: Japanse speelpoppen. This work was mentioned by contemporary critics. Burty (1874/04/25) reviews they have ‘the same lively motionlessness as the original’ (R87,p229). Compare S1879-3089 + S1880-4008 with about the same title.

1874-3-5                     Les Présents chinois (Londres)

Eng.: The Chinese presents (London);       Nl.: De Chinese cadeaus (Londen). Following Flescher (aR1) Moffett (R2,p118) suggests ‘Les Présents Chinois (Londres) (or: Chinese gifts)’ from a private collection. Note how thick the colours are in this picture; it doesn’t look much like a water-colour, more like a gouache or even an oil painting.

1874-3-6                     Intérieur parisien

Eng.: Paris Interior; Nl.: Inrichting van een kamer in Parijs. Following Flescher (aR1) Moffett (R2,p118) suggests ‘Intérieur Parisien (or: Parisian interieur)’ in Musée AHA d’Évreux. Note how thick the colours are in this picture; it doesn’t look much like a water-colour, more like a gouache or even an oil painting.

1874-4                        Cadre de paysages comprenant :

Eng.: Framework with landscapes including…: Nl.: (Schilders)lijst met landschappen met inbegrip van…: Note: this single catalogue number contains 4 paintings. It seems that all these works were made in Flanders. I was not able to find a single work that comes close to it. To compare I render just another landscape: Astruc, 1869-70ca, Landscape with wagon and Hay sticks (aquarelle), 14x17cm, Metropolitan (iR2).

1874-4-1                     Estaminet dans les Flandres

Eng.: Small café in Flanders;          Nl.: Kroeg in Vlaanderen

1874-4-2                     Jardins de Schaerbeek

Eng.: The gardens of Schaerbeek (= district of Brussels); Nl.: De tuinen van Schaerbeek (= wijk van Brussel). For the location see (iR9)

1874-4-3                     Intérieur d’estaminet

Eng.:  Interior of a small café;          Nl.: Inrichting van een kroeg

1874-4-4                     Étang de Saint-Josse-ten-Noode (Flandres)

Eng.: Pond of … (=district of Brussels; in its park?); Nl.: Vijver van … (=wijk van Brussel, in het betreffende park?). For the location of the district see and of the possible pond in the park see (iR9).

1874-5                        Les Poupées Blanches (Japon)

Eng.: The white (Japanese) dolls ;   Nl.: De witte (Japanse) speelpoppen. Compare S1880-4008 with about the same title.

1874-6                        Le Ménage mal assorti

Eng.: The badly fitted housekeeping (?); Nl.: Een slecht geschikt huishouden (Een huishouden van Jan Steen) (?).

Zacharie Astruc at the Salon:

Astruc exhibited almost yearly at the Salon.

Compare other artists called Astruc:

In 1865 an artist called F. Astruc exhibited in Toulouse 2 works: ‘le dimanche’ and ‘un effet de nuit’. This Astruc lived in Toulouse. In 1868 an artist called Frédéric Astruc exhibited at the Salon of 1868, with ‘Portrait de l’auteur’and ‘Vue prise à Paris ; effet de neige’. The catalogue mentions he was born in Puivert (Aude), about 60km north of the Pyrenees. The address is the same as where Zacharie Astruc lived the following years: Rue Lemercier, 91. In 1875 this Frederic Astruc would exhibit at the Salon des Refusés with a portrait. He than lived at 12, Rue Nollet in Paris. Later on he would exhibit at the Salon sometimes and at regional exhibitions. Was he a nephew of Zacharie?
In 1887 + 88 + 90 misses Pauline Astruc, also born in Anger and pupil of Zacharie exhibited watercolours. Was she a younger sister? In 1889 Jules-Godefrov Astruc, born in Avignon, exhibited at the Salon a project what had to lead to his diploma for the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1892 + 98 Jean-Bathélémy Astruc, born in Montpellier, exhibited sculptures at the Salon.
